tools for recreational math
Mathematica 7 Home Edition is the real thing (minus 64 bit capability) as far as I can tell with what amounts to a hobbyist only license. The commercial license is well over $2000, but for $295 you can play with math in the privacy of your own home as long as it is only for hobbyist purposes. Really neat stuff.

climate fitness and boundaries
It seems clear that the future world will have a different climate even if changes in human green house gases are made. The question is how big will those changes be - is there a way for us to make them small enough that the impact on the population can be dealt with. Increasingly people are talking about how do we live with a 2 or 4 degree C change. But that raises an interesting issue. There are many societies on the planet and their response to large changes in climate is not going to be evenly distributed. In the past year I've been hearing a lot about the climate fitness of a society. Here is a piece by Gaia Vince on the subject. Moving away from society and looking at how natural systems handle change, it is reasonable to create metrics and a map of where we are in a multi-dimensional space. A new paper in Nature examines nine planetary boundaries and makes estimates on where we are on each. On several there aren't any solid estimates, and on others we are in serious trouble. There has been some criticism of this as not really adding new information, but I think there is some value in understanding there are many issues. Perhaps each of these need to be convolved with risks associated with the measurements and projections.
See if you can stop after reading the first paragraph of this obit . Dollars to doughnuts, Robert H. Rines will be mainly remembered not for holding more than 800 patents, starting a law school or writing music for the stage, but for his dogged pursuit of the Loch Ness monster. ...
